Description

Shahi Zinda («the live tsar») - a monument of medieval architecture in Samarkand (Uzbekistan), ensemble of the mausoleums of the Samarkand nobility. The complex which has reached us consists of eleven mausoleums, consistently attached to each other during XIV-XV centuries. In 2001 the ensemble of the mausoleums Shahi Zinda together with other ancient constructions of Samarkand is included in the List of the World heritage of UNESCO.

History

The ensemble Shahi Zinda was formed throughout 9 centuries and includes more than twenty constructions IX-XIV and XIX centuries. Shahi Zinda - «the live tsar» - the complex is obliged by the name to a legend. In it the cousin of prophet Mohammed, Kusam ibn Abbas is said, that, has come to Samarkand with a small army for Islam statement. During one of attacks of pagans Kusam ibn Abbas has been amazed by an arrow, but has managed to disappear fr om eyes incorrect in the formed crevice (under other version, in a well) wh ere lives to this day.
